I'm low on Sat time, so this will be quick...
As a result of some unfavorable weather predictions, we got the word late yesterday afternoon that The South Pole closes today. It was a mad scramble for all the people planning to leave Thursday or Friday to get their stuff packed-up and themselves ready to go.
I spent some time with good friends last night most of whom are going McMurdo for the winter. I don't think I'd like to winter there. All the best to the winter MCM firecrews!
The last plane to/from the South Pole leaves today at 11:30am. After that, it's just the 60 of us until November. Most winterovers agree that we have been ready for this day for a while. There's no doubt we have a certain mind-set which has made us able to welcome to upcoming isolation and darkness.
Travel safe friends.
