C-17 flies-by the South Pole at 300 feet AGL:
Yesterday, the South Pole was treated to an airborne delivery of some goods via US Air Force C-17. I'm not sure what the items were, or why they had to be delivered this way. I heard that this was more of a training mission than anything else. So, many of us made our way out to the south edge of the station by the RF Building and Comms radome. Unfortunately for us spectators, the drop was about 1/2 mile away. The C-17 made 2 passes dropping about 20 pieces total. After the cargo was off-loaded, this aircraft made a 300ft fly-by of the station.

The real treat was the weather! Most spectators were more interested in enjoying being outside than the actual air drop. The air temp was about -15F, but there was no wind. The wind makes all the difference. We all stood around in the sun and imagined we were at the beach.
